About the treatment
The name is dramatic. The recovery is not.
People hear “fire and ice” and picture something they will need to hide from for a week. It is the opposite: this is on our menu precisely because you can have it and then go straight out.
The treatment runs in two phases and the order is the whole design. The first is an active professional mask that does two things at once — it loosens the bonds holding the dull, dead surface layer in place, and it drives blood flow up hard through the skin underneath. You feel that second part as a building warmth and then a firm tingle. It is not painful, it is unmistakable, and it is timed by the person watching your face rather than by any fixed rule.
The second phase is the half that makes it usable. A cooling mask goes straight on top in the narrow window when the skin takes everything in, calming the flush, taking the heat out and pushing moisture into a surface that has just been cleared. Skip that step and you would have a mild peel and a red face for the evening. Keep it, and you get the finish the treatment is actually booked for.
Nothing is abraded, nothing is lasered, and there is no sheet of skin coming off over the following days. What you notice is that the face reflects light evenly again, because the layer that was scattering it has been lifted and the skin under it has been rehydrated in the same sitting.
Why it suits this city
Skin that is not damaged, just flat
A large share of the faces we see in North York have nothing wrong with them clinically. No scarring, no significant pigment, no real lines. They just look tired, and no amount of serum fixes it.
There is usually a straightforward reason. Office towers around Don Mills and Eglinton run on air that has been heated, chilled, filtered and recirculated until there is very little moisture left in it, and most people spend the bulk of the year breathing it. Add a commute in cold wind at either end of the day and a surface layer that is not shedding properly, and you get skin that is dehydrated on top, sluggish underneath and dull to look at without ever being unhealthy.
That combination is exactly what this facial is built for. Lifting the stale layer deals with the scattering, the circulation surge deals with the greyness, and the cooling phase puts water back where the building has been taking it out. It is the reason the treatment reads as far more dramatic than its ingredient list suggests: it is fixing the three things that were making the face look flat, all in one visit.
Is there a date you are working towards?
Timing it
Four rules for booking this around a date
Booking a treatment for a specific date is usually a sign of impatience. Here it is simply what the treatment is for. There are still four things worth getting right.
Leave a couple of days, not a couple of hours
Any flush has long gone by then and the skin is still at its best. Scheduling it for the morning of the event is the error we see most often, and it is entirely avoidable.
Your first one should have nothing riding on it
Every skin reacts slightly differently to the active phase. Have one when the diary is empty, see what yours does, and then book the next for the date that matters. We will say this at the consultation whether or not you want to hear it.
Toronto’s event season is long and crowded
Weddings, galas and the corporate calendar run from late spring straight through to the holiday parties. If you are in a wedding party, hold a slot a few days before the date well in advance rather than calling the same week.
It is winter this earns its keep
Most people book it for summer occasions and then discover it does the most for them in February, when the office air and the commute have flattened their skin completely. That is when the difference between before and after is at its widest.
Tell us the date and we will place the appointment properly.
Indications
What is it good for?
Things that sit on the outside, dealt with fast. This is a treatment about how you look this week, not about changing what your skin does.
It will not touch sun spots, thread veins or indented scarring — those need pulse light or microneedling. It is also not the right call on skin that is currently broken, sunburned, in an eczema flare or in the middle of a cold sore, and we will reschedule rather than work around any of those. If you are on or recently finished a strong oral acne medication, tell us and we will wait. Everything we run in North York is on the Toronto clinic page.

Choosing between them
Fire & Ice or a hydro facial
These are the two treatments people shortlist when there is an event coming. They both leave you looking better the same day, and they get there by opposite means — one stimulates, the other cleans out.
Fire & Ice
- Resurfaces chemically and drives circulation up hard
- Best on skin that is flat, dull and lacking life
- You are aware of it throughout — warmth first, then a firm prickle
- A short flush afterwards, gone well within the day
- Judged on how the face catches the light
Hydro facial
- Cleanses, extracts and floods the skin with water
- Best where the problem is congestion, blackheads and city grime
- Comfortable throughout, with no heat and no tingle
- Nothing visible afterwards at all
- Judged on how clear and plump the skin feels
Flat and tired points to fire and ice. Blocked and grey points to the hydro facial. Say so at the consultation if acids have gone badly for you before. The hydro facial forgives far more, and switching you is a better outcome for everyone than pressing ahead.

Getting ready
Pre & post treatment
Short on both sides, which is the point of the treatment. The one thing that genuinely matters is arriving with skin that is not already irritated.
Coming in
- Five days: retinol and prescription vitamin A out. They make the active phase considerably sharper than it needs to be.
- Three days: no acids, no scrubs, no exfoliating devices, and nothing waxed or threaded on the face.
- A week: no other resurfacing treatment, and no fresh sunburn or windburn on the area.
- Tell us: about cold sores, about any oral acne medication now or recently, and about any previous bad reaction to an acid treatment.
Heading out
- Straight afterwards: warm and a little flushed, settling quickly. Most people go back to work or out the same day.
- That evening: keep the routine plain. Whatever you apply now will absorb unusually well, which cuts both ways.
- Day two or three: some skins flake lightly. Leave it alone — scrubbing at it is the only way to turn it into a problem.
- The whole week: sunscreen every morning, and skip the sauna and the hot yoga for the first day or so.
