About the treatment
Why there is carbon on your face at all
A laser needs something dark to aim at. Skin that is oily and congested is not, in itself, a target — so a layer of liquid carbon is painted on and left to sink into the pores, where it binds to the oil and debris inside them. The carbon becomes the target, and everything stuck to it comes along when the laser removes it.
That is the trick the treatment is built on, and it is the reason it works on skin that other lasers cannot read. The pigment is applied rather than inherited, so the laser is not relying on anything about your own colouring to find its mark.
You lie down, the mask goes on, it dries, and the laser passes over it in a series of quick pulses that feel warm with a light snap. There is nothing to recover from. Clients from the surrounding offices on Wynford Drive routinely book it and go straight back to a desk.
How it works
One machine, three separate effects
People book this for the deep clean and then notice the other two. All three come from the same pass of the handpiece.
The pore empties
The carbon that worked its way down into the follicle is vaporised, and the oil and dead cells bound to it leave with it. No squeezing, no suction, no acid — the contents are simply carried off with the particle they attached to.
Oil production settles
Heat reaching the sebaceous gland makes it less productive for a while. That is why skin often stays matte for longer than the clean alone would explain, and why oily skin tends to get more from a course than from one visit.
Collagen is provoked
Controlled warmth in the dermis is read by the body as a reason to repair. Over a series that shows up as firmer texture and slightly tighter pores — slower than the clean, and the part worth being patient for.
Oily by lunchtime however carefully you cleanse?
Why here
A Toronto summer is an oil problem
This is the treatment our Toronto bookings swing towards between May and September, and the reasons are specific to the way people here spend those months.
Humidity keeps everything on the surface
When the air is already saturated, sweat does not evaporate and neither does anything mixed into it. Sunscreen, sebum and make-up stay put on the face all day, which is the condition congestion needs.
The commute is part of it
A subway platform in August, a car with the air conditioning fighting the sun, a walk from the parking garage. Skin arrives at the office already coated, and again on the way home.
Helmets, masks and gym towels
Anything held against the face traps heat and friction over skin that is already producing more oil than usual. The jawline and forehead are where we see the results of that.
Higher sebum, larger-looking pores
Pores do not change size, but a full one looks bigger than an empty one. That is why the same face reads as smoother in February than in July, and why emptying them is the fastest visible fix.
Indications
What is it good for?
Oily, congested, coarse-textured skin, and the dullness that goes with it.
Where the problem is dehydration rather than oil, a Hydro Facial is the better choice, and inflamed acne usually needs blue light therapy alongside. The full list for north Toronto is on our Toronto clinic page.

Being straight with you
Four conversations we would rather have first
This is a laser, and heat on skin deserves a proper assessment rather than an online booking and a hope.
Deeper skin tones need a test patch
Toronto is a city of every complexion, and the settings that suit one do not suit another. On richer skin tones we test a small area and review it before treating a full face. Any clinic that skips that step is taking a risk with your pigment, not theirs.
Melasma and heat are a poor combination
Melasma can be provoked by warmth as readily as by sunlight. If that is your diagnosis, this is usually not the treatment we recommend, and we will say so at the consultation rather than after the fact.
A tan means waiting
Recently sunned or self-tanned skin changes how the energy is absorbed. Two weeks clear is the rule, and in a Toronto July that is the most common reason an appointment gets moved.
It is a course, not a cure
One session gives a real and visible clean. The oil control and the texture change need a series, and then maintenance, because your sebaceous glands do not permanently change their mind.

Getting ready
Pre & post treatment
The before list is about sun and actives. The after list is short, and sunscreen is the whole of it that matters.
In the fortnight before
- No sun on the face, no tanning bed, no self-tanner for two weeks. This one is not negotiable.
- Retinoids and acids down for five days, and tell us if you use them nightly.
- No waxing or threading of the face in the week before.
- Come bare-faced, with no moisturiser or SPF on. The carbon needs clean skin to settle into.
- Tell us about cold sores, recent fillers or acne medication. Any of the three changes the plan.
The days after
- Warm and pink for a few hours, occasionally into the evening. Nothing that stops you going out.
- High-factor sunscreen daily for a week, reapplied if you are outside. Treated skin marks easily.
- No actives for three days — no retinol, no acid, no scrub, no exfoliating cloth.
- Avoid heat for 48 hours: sauna, steam room, hot tub, hard training.
- A faint sandpaper feel for a day or two is normal. Moisturise and leave it alone.
Results
Carbon laser peel before and after
A You Glow Aesthetics client, photographed before and after. The forehead and the sides of the nose are where the pore change shows first, so start there rather than with the overall tone.

How much changes depends on how oily and congested the skin was to begin with, how many sessions are completed and what is used at home in between. The clean shows immediately; the oil control and texture build across a series.
