About the treatment
Water does the work that scrubbing used to do
A Hydro Facial runs a stream of fluid and a controlled vacuum across the skin through a single handpiece. The fluid softens and loosens what is sitting in the pore; the vacuum lifts it out and takes it away. Nothing is scrubbed, squeezed or dragged, which is why skin that reacts badly to manual extraction usually tolerates this well.
The same handpiece then runs in reverse. Once the surface is clear, serums are pushed into skin that can finally accept them, rather than sitting on top of a layer of dead cells and oil the way they do at home.
It is the treatment we book most often at our Wynford Drive clinic in North York, and the reason is unglamorous: it suits almost everyone, it leaves nothing visible to explain at work, and the difference is obvious the same afternoon.
Why here
What a large city leaves on a face
Toronto skin does not have a cold problem so much as an exposure problem. Four things come up in consultations here far more than anywhere else we work.
Traffic particulate settles and stays
Anyone commuting along the Don Valley, the 401 or the Eglinton corridor is spending real time in air carrying fine particulate. It lands on skin, mixes with sebum and sunscreen and works its way into the pore. Cleansing at the sink lifts the top of that. Suction lifts the rest.
Humid summers, occluded skin
A July dew point here is nothing like a prairie one. Sweat, sunscreen and make-up sit on the face all day instead of evaporating, and the congestion that follows arrives every year on schedule.
Smoke seasons are now normal
Wildfire smoke has reached the city repeatedly in recent summers. Skin that felt fine in May looks grey and feels rough after a fortnight of it, and a deep clean is the most direct answer to that.
Air-conditioned offices, then heated ones
Wynford Drive is an office district, and our clients spend their days in recirculated air — cooled and dehumidified for half the year, heated and dried for the other half. Dehydrated skin overproduces oil to compensate, and the cycle feeds itself.
Skin looking grey and feeling rough no matter what you put on it?
The appointment
Three jobs, one handpiece, one sitting
You lie down once and the tip is changed between stages. Nothing about it is dramatic to watch, which is rather the point.
Resurface
A textured tip and a mild solution take off the dead layer that is making everything look flat. This is the step that decides how well the rest of the treatment works, because nothing reaches skin it cannot get to.
Clear
The vacuum stage. Blackheads and softened sebum come out of the pore intact instead of being pushed deeper by a thumb. Your esthetician can show you what came off, which most clients find more persuasive than anything written on this page.
Feed
Serums go back in through the same handpiece — hydrating, calming or brightening depending on what we found. Cleared skin absorbs them properly, which is why this step is worth little without the two before it.
Indications
What is it good for?
Skin that is congested, dehydrated or simply tired, rather than skin with a single diagnosed problem.
If the main complaint is active, inflamed acne, blue light therapy is usually the better first move, and heavy surface oil often responds faster to a carbon peel. Everything we offer in north Toronto is listed on our Toronto clinic page.
More than one of those on the list, and unsure where to start?
Being straight with you
Who gets the least out of this
It is a broadly useful treatment, which makes it easy to oversell. Three situations where we would steer you elsewhere.
Deep lines and real laxity
This works on the surface and just below it. Structural change — collagen rebuilt at depth — is a different category of treatment, and no number of facials substitutes for one.
Established pigmentation
Brightness improves because the dull layer is gone, and that is genuine. Melasma and long-standing sun spots sit deeper than this reaches, and we will say so rather than sell you a series.
A skin barrier already in trouble
If you are mid-flare, peeling from a retinoid or raw from an eczema patch, adding exfoliation is the wrong move that week. We will settle the skin first and treat it afterwards.
Not sure this is the right treatment for what is bothering you?
Getting ready
Pre & post treatment
Almost nothing is required of you. The short list that does matter is about actives, not about downtime.
Beforehand
- Stop retinol and strong acids three days out. Skin already thinned by them exfoliates further than intended.
- Leave waxing and threading of the face for a week either side.
- Come with a bare face if you can. If you cannot, we will take the make-up off — it simply eats into your appointment.
- Say if you are on a prescription acne medication, or have been in the last six months.
- Mention cold sores. Anything that stimulates the skin around the mouth can bring one on.
Afterwards
- Faint pink for a short while, then nothing. Make-up the same day is fine if you need it.
- Sunscreen before you go outside, including in January — freshly cleared skin marks more easily.
- Hold off actives for two or three days. Plain moisturiser is doing more for you that week than anything with a percentage on the label.
- Skip the sauna, the steam room and hot yoga for a day.
- The occasional small spot a day or two later is congestion clearing, not a reaction.
Results
Hydro Facial before and after
A You Glow Aesthetics client photographed in the same light before and after. Look at the pore detail across the cheek rather than at the overall brightness, which lighting can flatter.

What you see depends on where your skin started, how congested it was and what you do between appointments. The immediate change is texture and clarity; the changes worth having accumulate over a series.
