About the treatment
The bacteria supply their own weakness
The organism behind inflammatory acne lives deep in the follicle and produces compounds called porphyrins as a by-product of its own metabolism. Those compounds happen to absorb blue light strongly. Shine enough of it on the skin and the porphyrins react, generating oxygen species inside the bacterium that it cannot survive.
The elegance of that is worth noticing. Nothing is applied, nothing is absorbed into your bloodstream, and nothing is being done to your skin at all — the light is only harmful to something that is already carrying the molecule that makes it harmful.
In the room it is unremarkable. Clean skin, eye shields, a panel positioned over the face, and a quiet spell under a very bright light. You go back to work afterwards with nothing visible to explain, which is why so many of our Wynford Drive clients slot it into a weekday.
Who it is for
Built for people the usual options have failed
Most of the clients who book this have already tried the standard route. Three situations come up again and again.
Skin stripped raw by treating it
Benzoyl peroxide, a retinoid and an acid cleanser all at once, and now the face is peeling, tight and still breaking out. Light adds nothing to that load, so the barrier gets a chance to recover while the bacteria are dealt with separately.
Reluctance about long courses of medication
Plenty of people would rather not be on an oral antibiotic for months, and plenty of doctors would rather they were not either. This is not a replacement for medical care, but it is a genuine option to discuss with whoever is managing your skin.
Adult acne that arrived out of nowhere
Breakouts starting in your thirties behave differently from teenage acne and respond badly to being attacked. A gentle, repeatable, non-drying treatment is usually the better shape of answer.

Why here
The Toronto breakout calendar
Acne has a seasonal rhythm in this city, and it is the opposite of the one you would expect if you assumed cold weather was the enemy.
July and August are the worst months
High humidity means sweat, sunscreen and oil stay on the face instead of evaporating. Skin that behaves itself all winter can break out reliably from the first humid week onwards.
The in-and-out of a summer commute
A humid platform, a cold air-conditioned office, a hot walk to the car. Skin spends the day adjusting, and oil production rarely settles into anything sensible while that is happening.
Anything worn against the face
Helmets on the trails, straps at the gym, a mask at work. Friction plus heat plus occlusion is the standard recipe for a jawline breakout, and it is a common story in our Toronto consultations.
September brings a different wave
Term starting, schedules tightening, sleep shortening. The breakouts we see in the autumn tend to be deeper and more hormonal than the summer ones, and they need a course rather than a single session.
Indications
What is it good for?
Inflamed, bacterial breakouts and the redness around them — not every kind of bump on a face.
Blackheads and congestion need physical clearing rather than light — that is a Hydro Facial or a carbon peel — and the marks left after a breakout has healed respond better to red light. The full list for north Toronto is on our Toronto clinic page.
Not sure whether your breakouts are the kind this treats?
Being straight with you
Four things this will not do
Acne is the area of this industry where the claims get loosest. Here is where the treatment genuinely stops.
It does not empty a blocked pore
Blackheads and closed comedones are a plumbing problem, not a bacterial one. Light passes straight over them. If that is most of what is on your face, a deep-cleansing treatment is the one to book instead.
It does not remove the marks left behind
The flat brown or red patches after a spot heals are pigment and blood vessels, not bacteria, and they fade on their own timetable. We can help that along — but with a different treatment.
It is not the answer to severe cystic acne
Deep, painful nodules that scar need a doctor, and telling you that is more useful than selling you a course. We are happy to work alongside a dermatologist; we are not a substitute for one.
It does not finish the job permanently
The bacteria are a normal part of your skin and they repopulate. A course clears the current picture; keeping it clear means occasional maintenance sessions and a routine that suits your skin.

Getting ready
Pre & post treatment
Clean skin in, ordinary life out. The only real instruction concerns anything that makes you sensitive to light.
Before your session
- Arrive with a clean face. Make-up, SPF and thick moisturiser all block the light from reaching anything.
- Tell us every product you use on your skin, particularly retinoids and acids. We may ask you to pause them.
- Flag any medication with a light-sensitivity warning — some antibiotics and acne drugs carry one.
- No waxing, threading or strong exfoliation on the face in the two days before.
- Come as you are otherwise. An active breakout is not a reason to cancel; it is the reason to come.
Afterwards
- No downtime at all. Perhaps a slight warmth, and make-up straight away if you want it.
- Keep your routine gentle for a day — skip the acid and the scrub, and let the skin be calm.
- Sunscreen as usual. The treatment does not make you sun-sensitive, but acne-prone skin marks easily, so protect it.
- Do not pick anything. The marks people are left with are almost always self-inflicted rather than caused by the acne.
- Stick to the course. A run of sessions close together is what clears a picture; one visit does not.
Results
Blue light therapy before and after
A You Glow Aesthetics client through a course of sessions. The count of active lesions is the honest measure here; overall tone takes longer and belongs to a different treatment.

How much changes depends on the type of acne, how many sessions are completed, what else is being used at home and whether anything hormonal is driving it. Some people respond quickly; others need the full course before the pattern shifts.
