About the treatment
Injury, on purpose, at a depth we choose
A pen holding a cluster of fine sterile needles moves across the skin, making thousands of tiny punctures at a depth set for the area being treated. Each one is a signal your body reads as damage, and the response to damage is repair: new collagen and elastin laid down where the channel was.
The needles are the trigger, not the treatment. Everything that changes the skin happens afterwards, over the following weeks, and it is built by you rather than applied by us. That is why the result develops slowly and why it lasts.
Depth is the variable that matters. Fine lines around the eye need a fraction of what an indented scar on the cheek needs, and that decision is made at the appointment with your skin in front of us. Numbing cream goes on for about half an hour first, so the session registers as pressure and vibration.
The distinction
Can you feel it, or only see it?
This is the single question that decides whether microneedling is your treatment, and it is worth doing the test before you book anything.
Close your eyes and run a fingertip over it
If the skin dips, catches or feels uneven under your finger, the problem is structural — tissue is missing beneath the surface. Rebuilding that is exactly what needling does, and nothing applied to the top of the skin will achieve it.
If it is flat, it is colour
Brown or red marks left where a spot used to be feel like nothing at all. That is pigment sitting in the surface layers, and a peel will shift it faster and more comfortably than needling would.
Most faces are a mix of both
Which is why a sensible plan often runs the two together — peels for tone across a series, needling for the handful of scars that have depth. We would rather set that out at the consultation than sell you six of one.
And some things are neither
Slack skin along the jaw and heavy sun damage are separate problems with separate answers. If that is what we see, we will say so rather than book you in for a course that cannot deliver.
Not sure whether your marks have depth or are only colour?
Afterwards
The first week, honestly
People plan badly for this because clinics describe it vaguely. Here is the actual shape of it.
Days one and two
Red and warm, much like a moderate sunburn, tightest on the second morning. No make-up on day one. This is the stretch where a mineral sunscreen and a plain moisturiser are the entire routine.
Days three and four
The redness fades to pink and the skin often flakes lightly, particularly around the nose. Mineral make-up covers it comfortably by now. Nobody in a meeting is going to ask.
Day five onwards
Back to normal to look at, and quietly busy underneath. Collagen keeps forming for eight to twelve weeks, which is when the change you booked for actually appears.
If you have an event in the diary, count back a fortnight from it before booking — and tell us the date at the consultation so the course can be built around it.
Indications
What is it good for?
Anything where the problem is structure rather than colour — scarring, texture, firmness, stretch marks.
Congestion and dehydration belong to a Hydro Facial instead. The full list for south Calgary is on our Calgary SE clinic page.
Have a concern and are not sure this is the treatment for it?
Why here
Two Calgary complications
Neither is a reason to avoid the treatment. Both are reasons to plan it properly.
The sun is stronger than it feels
At roughly a thousand metres, UV here is more intense than the temperature suggests, and freshly needled skin has almost no defence against it. Two weeks of daily sunscreen after each session is not a suggestion, and a ski trip the weekend after is a genuinely bad idea.
Dry air slows the healing stage
Skin repairs faster when it is not fighting to hold on to water. Through the winter, and especially after a chinook has stripped the humidity out of the air, keeping the barrier supported for the week after a session shortens the flaky stage noticeably.
Which makes the cold months the better window
Less UV, more time indoors, and no holiday photographs to worry about on day two. Clients who want to be at their best for the summer usually run the course from October to March.
And it is quietly compatible with everything else
Nothing about needling stops you working, training after the second day, or carrying on with the rest of your routine. It just wants a fortnight of sun discipline each time.

Getting ready
Pre & post treatment
Prepare by leaving your skin alone; recover by protecting it. Both lists are short.
The week before
- Stop retinoids, acids and scrubs five to seven days out.
- No sun, no tanning bed, no self-tanner for two weeks on the area.
- Tell us about cold sores. Needling can trigger an outbreak and it is straightforward to prevent.
- Nothing that thins the blood for a couple of days, unless it is prescribed.
- Arrive bare-faced, and allow half an hour for the numbing cream.
The week after
- Nothing on the skin for a day beyond what we send you home with. No make-up that first evening.
- Plain moisturiser and mineral sunscreen only for the first few days.
- Hold every active for a week: retinol, vitamin C, acids, scrubs.
- No sweating for 48 hours — gym, sauna, hot yoga.
- Let the flaking finish on its own. Pulling at it is how people turn a good result into a mark.
Results
Microneedling before and after
A client treated for acne scarring at You Glow Aesthetics. What has changed is the surface relief across the cheek — the shadows the scars were casting are what disappear first.

Individual results vary with scar type and depth, skin type, the number of sessions completed and how carefully the skin is protected between them.
