About the treatment
A facial that empties the pore instead of dissolving it
Every facial claims to deep-cleanse. What separates this one is mechanical: a handpiece runs a spiral tip over the skin, softens what is packed into the pore with a mild solution, and then draws it out under vacuum. Nothing depends on an acid being strong enough or on how hard someone can press.
The same pass that removes also delivers. The tip runs a serum against the skin while it works, so the surface is never left bare and stripped between steps. That is why it suits people who have been told their skin is too dry or too reactive for a proper clean-out.
There is no needle, no heat and nothing to recover from. At our Macleod Trail clinic in south Calgary it is booked more often than anything else on the menu, largely because it is the one treatment you can have and then go straight back to work.
Why here
What Calgary does to a skin barrier
This city is unusually hard on skin, and not for the reason people assume. It is not the cold – it is how fast the conditions change.
A chinook rewrites the weather in an afternoon
Temperature can climb twenty degrees between morning and evening and the relative humidity falls through the floor with it. Skin that was comfortable at breakfast is tight and papery by the time you leave the office. No routine adapts that quickly, which is why barriers here take a beating several times each winter.
Dry is the default, not the exception
Calgary sits among the driest of Canada’s large cities, and indoor heating removes what little moisture the outside air still holds. Dehydration on the surface is close to the baseline condition for most faces we see here.
Dehydrated skin often looks oily
It is the most common misreading we correct. A barrier short of water pushes out more oil to compensate, so people respond with stronger cleansers and more exfoliation, which takes the barrier down further. The shine gets worse. Adding water breaks that loop where stripping never will.
Altitude puts UV on top of it all
At roughly a thousand metres the sun is stronger than the temperature suggests, and a bright, freezing January day still delivers real exposure. That accumulates as dullness and uneven tone long before it shows as anything anyone would call sun damage.
Skin that swings between tight and shiny and never settles?
The appointment
Three passes, one sitting
The whole thing happens with you lying still and a handpiece moving over your face. Here is what each stage is doing.
Loosen
A gentle exfoliating solution runs across the skin while the tip works, lifting dead cells and softening the plug of oil and debris sitting inside each pore. This is the step that makes the next one possible; skipping it is why home extraction hurts.
Draw out
Vacuum pressure removes what has been loosened. You feel a tugging sensation, strongest across the nose and chin. Nothing is squeezed and no fingernail goes near your face, which is why there are no marks afterwards.
Put back
A hydrating and antioxidant serum goes in over the newly cleared surface, when absorption is at its best. This is the step that decides whether you walk out plump or merely clean.
Never had a treatment and unsure what to book first?
Indications
What is it good for?
Surface-level problems: hydration, congestion, tone and texture. Pick the one that sounds like your skin.
Indented scarring and slack skin need microneedling instead. Everything we offer in south Calgary is listed on our Calgary SE clinic page.
Recognise your skin in more than one of those?
Being straight with you
Where one session stops
Hydration lasts about a week
The plumpness is real and it is temporary. What you do between appointments decides how much of it survives – in a climate this dry, an occupied humidifier does more for your face overnight than most serums do.
Pigment needs a different tool
Clearing the surface brightens the skin, which makes tone look more even. It does not break down melanin. Sun spots and melasma are work for a peel or light-based treatment, and we would rather point you there than sell you facials that cannot reach them.
Depth is out of scope
Anything you can feel as a dip – an indented scar, a set line – sits below where this treatment works. That is a structural problem and it needs collagen, not cleansing.
Getting ready
Pre & post treatment
Short lists on both sides. Nothing here is complicated and nothing here disrupts your week.
Before you come in
- Pause retinol and acids for about three days. Skin that has already been exfoliated at home does not need it twice.
- No waxing or threading on the face in the week before.
- Come without make-up if you can – it saves time at the start of the appointment rather than being essential.
- Mention any cold sore history. It changes what we do around the mouth.
- Do not book straight after a burn. Even a spring sunburn from a chinook-warm weekend means waiting.
Afterwards
- Mild pinkness for twenty minutes or so, and then nothing anyone would notice.
- Make-up the same day is fine. This is a treatment people have at lunchtime.
- Hold the actives for three to five days and let the barrier settle.
- Nothing that overheats the face for a day or two: sauna, steam room, a hard workout.
- Sunscreen every morning, and mean it here – the winter sun at this altitude is not the mild thing it feels like.
Results
Hydro Facial before and after
A client at You Glow Aesthetics. The change to look for is in the surface: clearer pores across the nose and cheek, and skin that is reflecting light rather than absorbing it.

Individual results vary with skin type, how congested the skin was to begin with and how many sessions are completed.
