About the treatment
What an AFA peel actually is
AFA stands for amino acid filaggrin-based antioxidants. Stripped of the jargon: it is a peel built on amino acids rather than on one strong acid, and that single difference changes how the whole treatment behaves.
Conventional peels work by dissolving. A glycolic or TCA solution breaks the bonds holding the surface layer on, and on the way through it pulls oil and water out of the living skin underneath. The tightness, the stinging and the days of sheeting all come from that. Amino acids are water-loving instead, so they soften and hydrate the dead layer before lifting it away, leaving what is beneath intact.
For a Winnipeg clinic that distinction is not a nicety, it is the reason we can offer peels at all between November and April. A stripping peel on skin that has spent four months in heated indoor air is a bad idea. This one is not.
How it works
What it does to your skin
Four things, in sequence, across about forty minutes.
It hydrates the dead layer first
Amino acids pull water into the outermost cells. That layer becomes soft and loose rather than being dissolved off dry — which is exactly why it can be removed without dragging moisture out of everything underneath.
It lifts rather than strips
The softened surface comes away evenly. This produces the immediate result: the rough layer that was scattering light is gone, so skin reflects properly and reads bright instead of grey.
It works through uneven pigment
Sun spots, patches of melasma and the flat marks left by old breakouts sit in and just below that surface. Repeated peels reach progressively further into them, which is why tone shifts across a course and not in one visit.
It speeds up turnover
Clearing the surface signals the skin to replace it faster. Over the following weeks that shows up as finer texture and softer fine lines — the slow half of the result, arriving after the brightness has settled.
Been told your skin is too dry or too sensitive for a peel?
How a course runs
The strength is decided on the day
This is the part most people do not expect. You are not booking a fixed product — you are booking an assessment, and the peel is built from what we find.
We read the barrier first
How dry the skin is that week, whether it is flaking, how it reacted last time, and what you have been using at home. A face in mid-January and the same face in July are not the same starting point, and they do not get the same peel.
The layers are built up
AFA peels are applied in layers, so strength is a decision made during the treatment rather than before it. If the skin says stop, we stop. That control is what makes the treatment safe to repeat every few weeks.
Each session builds on the last
As the barrier improves across a course, the skin usually tolerates more. Most people end a course on a noticeably stronger peel than the one they started with — which is the intended direction of travel.

Indications
What is it good for?
Colour and surface. If the problem is a shade or a roughness rather than a dip, this is the right tool.
For indented scarring rather than flat marks, microneedling is the treatment. Everything else is on our Winnipeg clinic page.

Why here
Peeling on the prairies
Winnipeg gives you two extreme seasons and both of them affect pigment and barrier in opposite directions.
Long, bright summers deposit pigment
Prairie summers bring long daylight hours and high UV with very little shade. What that lays down does not show for months, which is why the sun spots people notice in November were made in July.
Winter is when to work through it
Resurfaced skin needs low UV exposure to hold the gain. The five months where nobody wants to be outdoors anyway are, conveniently, the right five months to run a course of peels.
The barrier has to survive it
The catch is that those same months leave skin at its driest. A stripping peel then is counterproductive. An AFA peel is the one that fits both halves of the problem at once, which is why it is the peel we run here.
Snow glare undoes careless aftercare
Fresh snow reflects UV straight back up. Freshly peeled skin plus a bright February afternoon is how people lose the progress they just paid for. Daily SPF through the winter is part of the treatment, not an upsell.
Getting ready
Pre & post treatment
The rules before a peel matter more than the ones after. Skin that arrives already stripped by actives reacts differently from skin that has been left alone.
Before your appointment
- Stop actives early: no retinoids, AHAs, BHAs or prescription acne creams for five to seven days.
- No hair removal: skip waxing, threading, electrolysis and shaving the face for 48 hours.
- Protect from sun: no unprotected exposure, tanning beds or sunburn for at least a week.
- Tell us about cold sores: if you are prone, it changes what we do.
- Mention anything recent done to your face in the past fortnight.
After your appointment
- Light flaking for two or three days, mostly nose and chin. Do not pick at it.
- Bland products only: gentle cleanser, rich moisturiser, nothing active.
- Hold everything — no exfoliants, vitamin C or retinoids until the flaking stops.
- No heat or sweat: hot showers, saunas, hard workouts and swimming out for 48 hours.
- Daily SPF on new skin, snow or shine.
Results
Chemical peel before and after
A client at You Glow Aesthetics. With a peel the change is in colour and clarity — tone evens out and the surface stops looking grey.

Individual results vary with skin type, how deep the pigment sits and how many peels are completed. Pigment work is a course, not a single visit.
