About the treatment
Clear skin is a pore problem before it is a surface one
Most people arrive having scrubbed for years without much changing. That is not a discipline failure. It is that scrubbing works on the top of the skin and the blockage is further down.
A pore fills from the inside. Oil that should drain slowly gets thicker, dead cells that should shed loosely stick together, and the two form a plug that a face wash never reaches. What you see on the surface — the roughness, the visible pores, the breakout that always returns in the same place — is the consequence, not the cause.
This treatment works on both levels in one appointment. Enzymes and professional-strength exfoliating actives break down what is binding the dead cells together, so the plug loosens rather than being forced out. Where a pore needs clearing after that, it is done by hand, under magnification, by somebody trained to know when to stop. Then the skin is calmed and rebalanced, because leaving it stripped is how you get the next round of congestion.
How a session runs
Loosen, clear, settle
Three stages, and the third is the one clinics cut when they are running late. We do not.
Loosen
A double cleanse, then the exfoliating stage. Strength is chosen on the day from what your skin is doing that week — an oily T-zone in July and the same face in February are not the same job.
Clear
Manual extraction where it is needed, and only where it is needed. Nothing is dug at. A pore that has not loosened is left alone and dealt with next time, which is the difference between clearing skin and scarring it.
Settle
A calming mask, then hydration and sun protection. Skin that has just been exfoliated and emptied is briefly open and dry. This stage is what stops the whole cycle starting again.
Skin that keeps congesting no matter what you buy?
Why here
What congests a Vancouver face
Damp air gets blamed for a lot. It is rarely the real culprit on its own.
Heavy moisturiser for eight months of the year
People reach for richer creams the moment the rain starts and keep using them into spring. On a skin that was never dry, that is a steady supply of occlusive product going straight into the pore.
Wet hair, hoods and helmets
The hairline, forehead and jaw take the brunt. Anyone commuting by bike through a Kitsilano winter knows the pattern: breakouts in a band exactly where the strap sits.
Sunscreen worn properly, which is a good thing
Daily SPF is the right habit and we will never tell you to stop. But a thick formula worn every day and removed with one careless cleanse at night is one of the most common causes of congestion we see.
The gym, then straight out
Sweat sitting under make-up or sunscreen for an hour after a class is a reliable way to block a pore. Rinsing at the studio matters more than the product you use at home.
Indications
What is it good for?
Congestion, blackheads, visible pores and the rough texture that comes with them.
If what is left behind is a dark mark rather than a blockage, that is a pigment job — see facial brightening. An indented scar needs microneedling. Everything we run in Kitsilano is on the Vancouver clinic page.
Not certain congestion is what you are dealing with?
Choosing between them
This or dermaplaning
Both are exfoliation and they get sold as the same thing. They work at different levels and suit different skins, and getting it wrong is how a congested face ends up worse.
Exfoliation for Clear Skin
- Chemical and enzymatic — it works into the pore, not just across it
- Includes extraction, so what is blocking the pore actually leaves
- The right route for oily, congested or breakout-prone skin
- Judged over a course, not a single visit
Dermaplaning
- Mechanical — a blade takes the dead layer and fine hair off the top
- No extraction, so a plugged pore stays plugged
- The right route for dull, dry, smooth-but-flat skin
- Judged the same afternoon
If you have active, inflamed breakouts, dermaplaning is the wrong answer and we will say so at the door. A blade across an inflamed spot spreads it.

Being straight with you
Four things worth knowing before you book
None of these will be a surprise if we have had the conversation first. They surprise people who have not.
Pore size does not change permanently
An empty pore looks dramatically smaller than a full one, which is most of what you see afterwards. The opening itself is largely genetic. Anyone promising to shrink it is describing the emptying, not the pore.
Things can look worse in week two
Loosening a deep plug sometimes brings it to the surface a few days later. It is not the treatment causing a breakout; it is the treatment finishing one that was already forming. It settles.
One session is a clean-out, not a fix
Skin that congests will congest again. A course spaced a few weeks apart, then something every couple of months, is what changes the pattern. We would rather say that now than sell you one and watch you come back disappointed.
What you do at home decides most of it
If the cream that caused the problem stays in your routine, we are emptying pores you refill nightly. Expect us to ask what you use and to be direct about it.
Getting ready
Pre & post treatment
Short, and the post-treatment side is the half that protects the result.
Before your appointment
- Stop retinoids five days out and acids three days out.
- Do not squeeze anything in the week before. An inflamed pore cannot be extracted cleanly.
- No waxing or threading on the face for a week.
- Bring a photo of your products, or the names. This is the part of the consultation that changes the most.
For a few days after
- Pink where extractions were done, usually gone by the evening and always by the next day.
- Leave it alone. No picking, no fingers, no fresh product experiments for three days.
- Cleanser, light moisturiser, sunscreen. Nothing active for seventy-two hours.
- Skip the sauna and the hot yoga for two days — sweat into a freshly cleared pore is exactly what you were trying to avoid.
