About the treatment
Your skin already knows how to rebuild. It needs a reason.
The machinery for producing collagen and elastin does not disappear as you age or after acne has settled. It simply stops being asked. Nothing is signalling that repair is required, so the scarring, the texture and the thinning stay exactly as they are indefinitely.
Microneedling supplies the signal. A pen carrying fine sterile needles creates thousands of narrow channels at a depth chosen for what we are treating, each one a small, clean, deliberate injury in otherwise healthy tissue. Your body reads that as damage worth repairing and starts building, and the material it lays down over the following months is what lifts a depression or thickens a thinned area.
Nothing is burned off and nothing is removed. At our Timberlands Drive clinic in Red Deer numbing cream goes on first, the pen is worked methodically across the area, and you leave looking as though you have caught the sun.
How it works
Depth is the entire decision
The needles are the same. How far they travel is what separates a pleasant facial from a treatment that changes a scar, and it is the one thing a device bought online cannot control.
Shallow
Barely past the surface. Useful for texture, absorption and a general freshening, and comfortable enough that numbing is sometimes unnecessary. It will not touch a scar and we will not pretend otherwise.
Medium
Into the layer where collagen is actually built. This is where most of our work happens — texture, enlarged-looking pores, fine lines, early scarring — and where the treatment starts requiring a course rather than a visit.
Deeper, and only where it is warranted
Established scarring and stretch marks need reaching, and that means more discomfort, more downtime and a proper reason. We go there when the assessment says so, not by default.
Been using a roller at home and seeing nothing?
Why here
Timing a course to a central Alberta year
For a while after a session the skin takes light badly, and you will be repeating that for the better part of half a year. Locally, that argues strongly for one season over the other.
The dark months are the working months
Short days, covered skin and no reason to be sitting out in it. Between November and March keeping treated skin out of the sun costs you nothing at all, which is why most of our courses start in the autumn.
Snow glare still counts
The mistake people here make. A bright February day on an open field or a frozen lake puts real ultraviolet on your face, and treated skin marks easily. Sunscreen through the whole course, whatever the thermometer says.
Dry air slows the closing
Skin with thousands of open channels rebuilds more slowly when the air is pulling moisture out of it. Moisturising properly for the first few days matters more here than it would on the coast.
Four to six appointments, four to six weeks apart
That is half a year, and for anyone driving in from Sylvan Lake, Lacombe or Innisfail it is worth mapping out before starting. We are open seven days, which usually makes it workable.
Indications
What is it good for?
Problems that come from missing structure underneath rather than from something sitting on top.
Flat brown or red marks left after a spot has healed are pigment, not scarring, and do not need needling. Surface congestion and dullness belong to a Hydro Facial. Everything available in Red Deer is on our Red Deer clinic page.
Assumed nothing would ever touch your acne scarring?
Safety
Four reasons we would send you home today
We check all of these on the day rather than assuming. Being turned away once is considerably better than the alternative.
A breakout in progress
Needling across inflamed lesions moves bacteria through thousands of fresh channels and risks scarring the very skin you came to improve. We settle the acne first. That order is not flexible however keen you are.
A cold sore, or a history of them
Needling around the mouth can trigger an outbreak, and an outbreak across freshly opened skin is genuinely worth avoiding. Tell us in advance and it can be planned around rather than discovered.
Sun or windburn on the area
Skin that is already inflamed does not need a second insult. A weekend at the lake or a long day out in a hard wind means rescheduling, and we would rather move you than treat it.
Isotretinoin, or blood thinners
Skin on or recently off a prescription retinoid heals differently, and the usual guidance is six clear months. Blood-thinning medication is a conversation rather than an automatic no, but it has to be had before we start.
Not sure whether something rules you out?
Getting ready
Pre & post treatment
Two days of genuine care, then months of SPF and waiting. That is the shape of it.
Before your appointment
- A week clear of your retinoid and of anything acidic or abrasive.
- Fourteen days without the area catching any sun or picking up colour from anywhere else.
- Say if you get cold sores so it can be pre-empted rather than managed.
- Six clear months since isotretinoin, and flag any blood-thinning medication.
- Come bare-faced and allow extra time at the start for the numbing cream.
The days after
- Red, warm and tight like moderate sunburn for a day or two, with pinpoint marks. All normal.
- Water and a plain moisturiser only on day one. No make-up and nothing with an active in it.
- Hands off, and change your pillowcase.
- No gym, sauna, steam or hot tub for 48 hours — sweat reaches open channels.
- Moisturise more than usual in this climate, and sunscreen daily from day two onwards.
Results
Microneedling before and after
A You Glow Aesthetics client treated for acne scarring over a course. Watch how the light falls across the cheek rather than hunting for individual marks — what has changed is the shape of the surface.

Outcomes vary with the type and depth of the scarring, your age, how many appointments are completed and how well the skin is protected in between. Collagen is laid down and then spends months organising itself, so judge this three months after the final session.
