About the treatment
The one facial we would give almost anybody
Most treatments on our list have a clear candidate and a clear group we turn away. This one is unusual because the honest answer to who it suits is nearly everybody: oily skin, dry skin, reactive skin, skin that has never had a facial and skin that reacts to everything.
The reason is that it does not rely on a reaction. Fluid and a controlled vacuum run through a single handpiece — the fluid softens what has set hard inside the pore, the vacuum lifts it out and away. Nothing is left on the skin to keep working, nothing has to be neutralised, and the intensity is a dial your esthetician turns rather than a chemical you have to hope about.
Then the same handpiece runs the other way, putting serums into a surface that can finally absorb them. At our Timberlands Drive clinic in Red Deer this is the appointment we book more than any other, and it is usually where a new client starts.
How it works
What the vacuum reaches that your hands cannot
Washing your face properly is worth doing and it stops at a certain depth. Here is where that line sits.
The surface comes off first
A textured tip and a mild solution lift the dead layer sitting on top. That layer is why skin looks flat and why nothing you apply seems to sink in, and no cleanser removes it thoroughly.
The plug is softened, not scrubbed
What blocks a pore is oil that has oxidised and hardened with dead cells packed around it. It has to be loosened chemically before anything can move it, which is what the second pass does.
Suction takes it out along the same path
The contents leave the way they arrived. Compare that with pressing, which forces material through the follicle wall into the tissue around it — the cause of most bruising, broken capillaries and marks left behind after extractions.
Then the pore is filled with something useful
Serums go back in through the handpiece while everything is still open and clear. This is the step that makes the difference last more than an afternoon.

Why here
Skin that works outside in central Alberta
A good share of our Red Deer clients spend their working day in the weather rather than looking at it through a window. That produces a specific kind of face.
Wind and cold thicken the surface
Skin responds to sustained exposure by building a heavier dead layer. It is a sensible defence and it is also what makes a complexion look grey and feel rough by February, and it is exactly what the first pass removes.
Sun is a year-round problem, not a summer one
Between a field or a site in July and snow glare in January, outdoor workers here accumulate more exposure than almost anyone. Sunscreen gets skipped in winter by nearly everybody, and the damage does not care about the season.
Dust, diesel and equipment
Grain dust, road dust, shop air. Fine particulate mixing with sweat and sunscreen and working into the pore is a bigger factor here than people credit, and it is not something a wash at the end of the shift reaches.
Less chinook relief than Calgary gets
The warm winds weaken as they move north, so our winters hold their cold for longer stretches. Skin here spends more consecutive weeks in the same dry, hard conditions rather than swinging back and forth.
Indications
What is it good for?
Congestion, dullness and dehydration, and skin that reacts badly to anything stronger.
Surface flaking and fine facial hair belong to dermaplaning, and pigment or tone to an AFA peel. Everything we offer in Red Deer is listed on our Red Deer clinic page.

Practicalities
If you are driving in from out of town
Plenty of our clients come from Sylvan Lake, Lacombe, Blackfalds, Innisfail and further. That changes how it is worth planning, so here is the practical advice we give them.
Stack the visit
If you are making the drive anyway, dermaplaning immediately before a Hydro Facial takes very little extra time and gets noticeably more out of both. Say so when you book and we will allow for it.
Monthly beats occasional
Once every four weeks matches your own cell turnover. Two visits a year will each be pleasant and will not change anything, and we would rather tell you that than take the bookings.
We are open seven days
Including Sunday afternoons, which is usually the easiest slot for anyone working a rotation or driving in from the county. Worth knowing before you try to fit it into a weekday.

Getting ready
Pre & post treatment
Hardly anything is asked of you beforehand. The list afterwards is short and the sunscreen line is the one that matters.
In the days before
- Retinol and acids off for three days. Skin already thinned by them exfoliates further than intended.
- Nothing waxed or threaded on the face in the week either side.
- Bare face if you can, otherwise taking the make-up off simply uses your appointment time.
- Tell us about prescription acne medication, now or in the last six months.
- Flag cold sores so we work carefully around the mouth.
Afterwards
- Pink for a short while, then nothing at all. Make-up the same day is fine.
- Sunscreen before you go back outside, January included. Freshly cleared skin marks more easily than skin with its dead layer intact.
- Park the actives for a couple of days. An unremarkable moisturiser will do more for you this week than anything with a percentage on the front.
- Skip the sauna, the hot tub and hard training for a day.
- A small spot or two afterwards is congestion surfacing rather than a reaction.
Results
Hydro Facial before and after
A You Glow Aesthetics client, photographed under matching light. Judge it on the pore detail across the cheek and beside the nose; overall brightness is the easiest thing for lighting to flatter.

Where your skin was before you came in, how blocked it had become and your habits between appointments all shape the result. One visit shifts clarity and feel; the rest is built up across a series.
