About the treatment
An acne treatment that does not dry you out
Nearly everything sold for breakouts works by removing oil, and in a climate like this one that creates a second problem while solving the first. Benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid and a retinoid on top of a central Alberta winter is how people end up with skin that is simultaneously peeling and breaking out.
Blue light takes a different route. The organism behind inflammatory acne produces compounds called porphyrins as part of its own metabolism, and those compounds absorb blue light strongly. Put enough of that light onto the skin and the reaction it sets off produces reactive oxygen inside the organism itself, which is not something it can live through. Nothing is applied, nothing is absorbed, and nothing is stripped.
That selectivity is the appeal. The light is only harmful to something already carrying the molecule that makes it harmful, so your barrier is left entirely alone. At our Timberlands Drive clinic in Red Deer it is what we suggest for anybody whose skin has been dried into a worse state by its own treatment.
How it works
What it reaches, and what it passes straight over
Acne is not one condition, and this treats a specific part of it. Knowing which part saves you booking the wrong thing.
Inflamed spots: yes
Red, raised, sore lesions with bacteria driving them are exactly what the light acts on. This is the category where a course visibly reduces the count, and it is the main reason to book.
The redness around them: yes
Inflammation settles alongside the bacterial load, so the general angry look of a breakout eases even before individual spots have gone. Clients often notice this first.
Blackheads and closed bumps: no
A blocked pore is a plumbing problem, not an infection. Light passes over it without effect. Where the face is mostly that, the appointment you want is a proper deep clean, and we will point you at it rather than take this booking.
The marks left behind: no
Flat brown or red patches after a spot has healed are pigment and blood vessels. They fade on their own schedule and need a different treatment to be hurried along.
Peeling from your acne treatment and still breaking out?
Why here
Why treating acne in this climate goes wrong
The standard advice about acne was not written for people living through four months of cold, dry air. Around here it backfires in a predictable way.
Drying products plus dry air
Strip the oil from skin that is already losing water to the weather and the barrier fails. It responds by producing more oil, not less, and the breakouts carry on while the face flakes. We see this every winter.
Anything strapped to your face
Hard hats, balaclavas, helmets, masks. Heat plus friction plus occlusion for a full shift is the standard recipe for a jawline breakout, and it does not care how good your skincare is.
Rotations and broken sleep
Shift patterns disrupt the hormonal rhythm that partly governs oil production. The deeper, more painful breakouts we see tend to belong to people whose weeks do not have a fixed shape.
No downtime, no restrictions
Nothing about this stops you going straight back to work, and there is no reaction that the cold on the way to the truck can make worse. That matters more than it sounds if you work outdoors.
Indications
What is it good for?
Spots with bacteria behind them, and the angry look of the skin they sit in.
Congestion needs clearing rather than light — that is a Hydro Facial — and the marks left once a breakout has healed respond to an AFA peel, with scarring needing microneedling. The full list for Red Deer is on our Red Deer clinic page.
Do your breakouts fall into the category this actually helps?
Being straight with you
When you should see a doctor instead of us
This is a clinic, not a medical practice, and there are situations where booking with us would be the wrong use of your time and money.
Deep, painful nodules
Lumps under the skin that hurt to touch, last for weeks and leave marks behind are the kind of acne that scars. That needs a doctor and probably a prescription. We are happy to work alongside one; we are not a substitute.
It arrived suddenly in adulthood
Acne appearing out of nowhere in your thirties or forties, particularly alongside other changes, is worth having investigated rather than treated cosmetically. Something may be driving it that light will not address.
It is already scarring
If you can see pitting forming, the priority is stopping the damage rather than improving the appearance, and that is a medical decision. Come back to us for the scarring once the acne itself is controlled.

Getting ready
Pre & post treatment
Turn up washed, leave and carry on. The only thing we genuinely need from you is a full list of what you are taking and applying.
Before your session
- Wash it off before you come. Anything sitting on the surface — foundation, SPF, a heavy cream — stops the light getting where it needs to go.
- Bring the products, or a photograph of them. Retinoids and acids in particular may need pausing, and we can only advise on what we can see.
- Check your prescriptions for a photosensitivity note. A number of acne medications and antibiotics carry one.
- Leave the face alone for 48 hours beforehand — no wax, no thread, no vigorous scrub.
- Do not postpone because you are broken out. That is the state we want to treat, not one to hide from us.
Afterwards
- Straight back to normal. Perhaps a little warmth for a few minutes; cosmetics immediately if you need them.
- Give it a quiet 24 hours. Park the exfoliants and let the skin settle on its own.
- Carry on with SPF. Nothing here increases sun sensitivity, but skin prone to breakouts also scars and stains easily.
- Hands off entirely. The lasting marks people carry from acne were usually put there by fingers, not by the spot.
- See it through to the end. A single visit will not shift the overall picture; a completed series can.
Results
Blue light therapy before and after
One of our clients across a series of sessions. Count the active spots rather than assessing the complexion — evenness of tone is slower and is somebody else’s job.

The kind of acne you have, the length of the series, your routine at home and whether hormones are involved all change what you get. A few people turn a corner early. Most need the full run before the pattern breaks.
