Quick Answer

What happens in the week after a laser lipo session?

Most of the work, in fact. People picture a machine that removes fat; what actually happens is that the machine opens fat cells and your own body spends the following week disposing of the contents. The first twenty-four hours are the most active clearing period. Days two to four the area may feel tender. Days five to seven the change starts becoming visible. Water and movement genuinely affect the result.

About the treatment

Most of this happens after you have gone home

People picture a machine that removes fat. What actually happens is that a machine opens fat cells, and your own body spends the following week disposing of what was inside them. The appointment is the smaller half of the process, and understanding that explains nearly every rule attached to it.

The opening is done with low-frequency ultrasound. Rapid pressure changes inside the fat layer form and collapse microscopic bubbles, and the collapses destabilise the cell membranes around them. The frequency is chosen so that fat responds and the tissue around it does not, which is why muscle, blood vessels and skin are unaffected. A laser working at the same time helps move more of the released contents out.

From there it is your lymphatic system and your liver. They carry the released material away and process it over days, not minutes. That is why appointments at our Ranchlands Boulevard clinic in northwest Calgary sit about a week apart, why water matters more here than any setting on the machine, and why the result appears gradually rather than on the table.

The week after

What is going on between appointments

Clients often think nothing is happening in the gap. The gap is where the treatment finishes itself.

01

The first 24 hours

The area is warm, occasionally faintly pink, and often feels a little full. Released material is entering the lymphatic system. Walking, drinking and keeping moving genuinely help; sitting still all evening does not.

02

Days two to four

Transport and processing. Nothing to see and nothing to feel, and this is where the outcome is actually decided by how much water you are drinking and how much you are moving.

03

Days five to seven

The area settles and is ready to be treated again. Come back earlier than this and the energy goes into tissue that has not finished the last round, which achieves nothing and is why we will not compress a schedule.

Why here

Two things about Calgary that change how this runs

The physics is the same anywhere. The practicalities are not, and both of these come up in our consultations every week.

You need more water than you think you do

At this elevation, in air this dry, you lose fluid steadily through your skin and your breath without ever feeling thirsty. Since the disposal of everything this treatment releases depends on being properly hydrated, that is not a wellness aside on this page — it is the mechanism.

A chinook week is a dehydrating week

Warm dry wind, a twenty-degree swing and a headache by Thursday. If a session falls in one, push the fluids harder than usual rather than assuming the weather is irrelevant to a body treatment.

We are open Monday to Friday

A course means eight to twelve appointments roughly a week apart, all of them on a weekday afternoon. That is worth checking against your schedule before you start rather than three weeks in.

The covered months are the practical ones

Treated skin should stay out of strong sun, which is effortless from October to April and takes attention in July. Most clients here run a course through the winter and are finished before anyone sees the area.

Indications

What is it good for?

A defined pocket on the abdomen, flanks, back or thighs, in somebody whose weight has settled.

Fullness under the chin is treated on the jawline lift page, and shaping the buttocks and upper thighs belongs to the non-surgical butt lift. Everything available in northwest Calgary is on our Calgary NW clinic page.

Judging it

How to measure this, and how not to

More clients talk themselves out of a real result than fail to get one. Almost always it is because they measured the wrong thing.

01

Use a tape, not a scale

Fat is bulky and light. Centimetres off a waist can happen with the number on the scale essentially unchanged. Mark the spot you measure — navel height, or a set distance above the hip bone — and use the same one every time.

02

Photograph under fixed conditions

Same room, same light, same distance, same time of day, standing the same way. Nothing exposes a false comparison faster than two photographs taken in different lighting, and nothing proves a real one better than two taken in the same.

03

Wait a month past the last session

Clearance continues well after the course ends, so the final appointment is not the finish line. Judging it that week undersells whatever you actually achieved.

Getting ready

Pre & post treatment

Everything on both lists exists to support the clearing stage. None of it is padding.

Ahead of each session

  • Raise your water intake two days out, not on the morning. In this climate that means more than you would need at sea level.
  • Eat something light beforehand rather than arriving on an empty stomach or straight after a heavy meal.
  • Bare skin on the area — no cream, no oil, no self-tanner.
  • No sunburn, and nothing active on that skin for three days beforehand.
  • Declare pregnancy, a pacemaker or implanted device, and any liver or kidney condition at the point of booking.

Through the week after

  • Warmth and a light buzzing feeling in the area, gone within the hour.
  • Keep drinking every day until the next appointment, not just on treatment day.
  • Move. A walk the same evening and something active the next day both help the drainage this depends on.
  • No hot tub, sauna or steam for two days, and keep alcohol modest — it works directly against the clearing.
  • Keep the area covered or protected in strong sun, including on the hill in winter.

Laser lipo cavitation before and after

A You Glow Aesthetics client, lower abdomen, photographed before the first session and after the last. The silhouette has changed; body size has not, and that distinction is the entire treatment.

What any individual sees depends on the area, the number of sessions completed, fluid intake across the course and whether weight holds steady afterwards. Cells destroyed do not return; neighbouring ones can still enlarge, so the shape holds as long as the weight does.

Frequently Asked Questions

Because on this treatment it is the mechanism rather than general advice. The machine opens the fat cells; your lymphatic system and liver remove what comes out, and both work poorly when you are short of fluid. At Calgary elevation in dry air you lose water steadily without ever feeling thirsty, which makes this more of an issue here than at sea level.

No, and we will not book it that way. The week between sessions is roughly how long your body needs to process the last one. Treating an area that has not caught up puts energy into tissue that is still busy and achieves nothing, so compressing the schedule costs money without buying time.

Probably not much, and that is not a failure. Fat takes up a lot of room for its weight, so a waist can visibly narrow while the scale barely moves. Measure with a tape at a marked point and photograph in fixed lighting; people who judge this by the scale regularly talk themselves out of a result they actually got.

Yes. We are open Monday to Friday and close in the late afternoon, and a course is eight to twelve visits about a week apart. It is worth checking that against your schedule before you start rather than discovering the clash in week three.
