About the treatment
Warmth, and a repair response you never feel starting
Skin holds its shape because of a scaffold of collagen and elastin underneath it. That scaffold is built and rebuilt continuously through your twenties, slows from your thirties, and from then on is dismantled faster than it is replaced. Nothing dramatic happens on any given day. One year the jaw and the neck simply read differently in a photograph.
This treatment intervenes in that process rather than covering the result. Energy is delivered into the deeper layers of the skin and raises their temperature into a narrow window — warm enough that the tissue registers it as something to respond to, gentle enough that nothing is injured. The response is the point: existing collagen fibres tighten, and the cells that manufacture new ones are switched back on.
On the surface almost nothing happens. You feel a handpiece being moved in slow passes across the face and down the neck, with warmth that builds and eases. There is no anaesthetic, no recovery and nothing to explain, which is the reason clients at our Ranchlands Boulevard clinic in northwest Calgary book it on a working afternoon.
How it works
Three effects on three different timescales
Understanding which is which prevents the two most common disappointments: expecting too much on the day, and giving up before the part that matters arrives.
The same afternoon
Collagen already in the skin contracts as it is heated, and circulation rises. That gives a modest immediate firmness and a flush that reads as healthy. It is genuine and it is the smallest part of the outcome.
Over the following weeks
The fibroblasts — the cells that build the scaffold — are stimulated into producing new collagen and elastin. Nothing is visible yet. This stage is invisible, unglamorous and the whole reason the treatment works.
Across three to six months
The new material matures and organises itself, and the skin gradually reads as firmer and better supported. This is the change worth having, and it arrives so slowly that a photograph taken on day one is the only honest way to see it.
Noticed your jaw and neck changing in photographs?
The neck
The harder half, and the one everybody ignores
Most people book this thinking about their face and then discover that the neck is what has been giving them away. It behaves differently, and it is worth knowing why.
The skin is thinner to begin with
There is less structural support down there than on the face, and fewer oil glands to keep it conditioned. It shows change earlier and it shows it more plainly, which is why a well-maintained face above a neglected neck looks odd.
It never stops moving
Every swallow, turn and nod folds the same skin along the same lines. Repeated creasing on tissue with limited support is how horizontal neck lines establish themselves.
It is left out of every routine
Serums stop at the jaw and so does sunscreen, for most people, for decades. Sun exposure on an unprotected neck across a Calgary lifetime accounts for a great deal of what we are asked to treat.
Looking down does not help
Hours a day with the chin dropped towards a phone or a laptop keeps the front of the neck shortened and folded. It is not the cause of ageing, but it is a daily contribution and it is worth being aware of.
Indications
What is it good for?
Loss of firmness and the fine crepey texture that comes with it, across the face and down the neck.
Where the concern is specifically the line of the jaw and fullness beneath the chin, the jawline lift is the more targeted page. For surface texture and dullness, start with a Hydro Facial. The full list for northwest Calgary is on our Calgary NW clinic page.
Face keeping up but the neck giving you away?
Being straight with you
This is not a facelift, and four other things
The scale of change is different
Surgery repositions tissue. This improves the quality and tension of the skin you have. On the right candidate that is a real, visible improvement; on somebody expecting a surgical result it will always fall short, and we would rather you heard it here.
Timing beats intensity
The people most pleased with this are the ones who started when the change was still early. Beginning at the point where skin has genuinely let go means asking a treatment to do something it was never able to do.
It needs maintaining
The collagen built during a course is real, and it ages at the same rate as everything else. Most clients run a course and then a session every few months, rather than treating it as something finished.
Sunscreen decides half of it
Ultraviolet breaks down collagen faster than any treatment builds it. Someone having sessions and skipping sunscreen is paying us to refill a bucket with a hole in it, and at this elevation the hole is a large one.

Getting ready
Pre & post treatment
A short list on both sides, and the after-care is mostly about protecting what you have just paid to build.
Before your session
- Pause retinoids, acids and strong exfoliants for three to five days across the face and neck.
- No sunburn, no fresh tan and no self-tanner on the area. Two weeks clear is the rule.
- Arrive with clean skin — no make-up, no oil, no serum, no sunscreen, and take necklaces off.
- Tell us about recent injectable work, cosmetic procedures or dental surgery, and about any implant or device in the head and neck.
- Come hydrated. Warm skin is more comfortable to treat when it is not already dry.
The days that follow
- Pink, warm and occasionally slightly puffy for a few hours. It settles on its own.
- A mild cleanser and a plain moisturiser for three days, and nothing with a percentage on the bottle.
- No sauna, steam room, hot yoga or hard training for a day or two.
- Broad-spectrum sunscreen every morning, face and neck, for as long as you want the result to last.
- Be patient and photograph it. Judge this at three months, not at three days.
Results
Face and neck tightening before and after
A You Glow Aesthetics client across a course of sessions. The useful comparison is the firmness of the skin across the cheek and under the eye rather than any change in the shape of the face.

How much anyone gains depends on their age, how much elasticity remains, how many sessions are completed, sun exposure and general health. This is a slow treatment and the honest assessment comes months after the course, not days.
