About the treatment
Sound, not heat and not cold
Three technologies compete for the area under the chin: one freezes fat, one burns it, and one shakes it apart. What we run at Ranchlands is the third, and the difference is worth understanding because it explains why the appointment feels like nothing at all.
A handpiece pressed under the jaw delivers low-frequency ultrasound into the tissue. Sound at that frequency travels through skin, muscle and nerve without doing anything to them, because those tissues are elastic enough to move with the wave. A fat cell is not. It is a thin membrane stretched around a droplet of oil, and under a rapidly alternating pressure wave, microscopic bubbles form and collapse against that membrane until it gives way.
The cell releases its contents and they leave the way any other fat leaves your body. The released material is taken up by the lymphatic system, carried to the liver and processed as ordinary fat. Nothing is drained out and nothing is thrown away by us — which is exactly why the result appears over the following weeks rather than the following morning.
There is no needle, no anaesthetic, nothing enters the skin, and the sensation is a low buzz and mild warmth. You can drive home, go back to work, and nobody will know you have been.
What to expect
In the chair, start to finish
People are often surprised at how unremarkable this appointment is. That is the correct reaction.
Before we start
We look at the area with your chin level and then slightly raised, because the two positions tell us different things about how much of what you are seeing is fat and how much is skin. We mark the treatment area and go through what a realistic course looks like for you specifically.
During
Gel goes on, the handpiece moves slowly across the pad, and you hear a high tone in your ears. That sound is the ultrasound reaching the inner ear through bone. It is harmless, it stops the moment the head lifts, and it is the strangest part of the whole thing.
Afterwards
The gel comes off, the area may be slightly pink, and that is the end of it. We will ask you to drink properly for the next couple of days and to keep moving, because both of those help the lymphatic system carry the released fat away.
Come and see what the area looks like under a proper assessment.
Why here
Four things that make a difference in northwest Calgary
This treatment depends more on what happens between appointments than most, and a couple of those things are genuinely local.
Dry air quietly dehydrates you
The clearance route for everything released here is your lymphatic system, and it works better on someone who is properly hydrated. At this altitude, in air this dry, most people are running a little short without noticing. Drinking properly in the days around a session is not spa advice, it is part of the mechanism.
Movement matters, and winter gets in the way
Lymph has no pump of its own; it moves when you do. A cold snap that stops people walking for three weeks is the most common reason a course underperforms here. Nose Hill and Crowfoot are fine in a chinook and useless at minus thirty, so have an indoor fallback.
Weekdays only, and it costs you nothing
Our Ranchlands Boulevard clinic is open Monday to Friday and closed at weekends. For most treatments that limits when you can book. For this one it does not matter at all, because there is no recovery to hide — you can come at lunchtime and go back to the office.
The same slot every week is the easiest way to finish
Results here come from completing a course, not from any one appointment. A standing weekday booking is far more likely to survive a Calgary winter than a good intention to phone us each time.
Let us map out what a realistic course looks like for you.
Indications
What is it good for?
A soft pad of fat under the chin that does not shift with weight loss, on skin that still has reasonable tone.
If the softness under your jaw is loose skin rather than fat, removing volume will make it hang more rather than less, and the honest answer is tightening instead. We can also treat other areas with the same technology — see laser lipo cavitation. The full menu is on the Calgary NW clinic page.
We will tell you which of the two you have before you book anything.
Choosing between them
Three ways to change a jawline, all of them on Ranchlands Boulevard
This branch is the only one of ours that runs all three. They are not competing products — they answer three different reasons a jawline loses its line, and the consultation exists to work out which of the three you are.
Too much fat
A defined pad you can pinch, sitting below a jaw that is otherwise still crisp. Skin snaps back when you release it. This page is your treatment: remove the volume and the line underneath reappears.
Not enough support
Very little to pinch, but the edge of the jaw has softened and the skin along it feels slack. Taking volume out would make that worse. Face and neck tightening is the right route.
Contour rather than volume
The jaw itself reads soft and undefined in profile, more than it reads heavy. That is a shaping question, and a jawline lift addresses it directly.
A fair number of people turn out to be two of the three at once, usually the first and the second. When that happens the order matters: reduce the pad first and then tighten, because tightening around fat that is about to go is work you would have to repeat.
One free consultation answers all three questions at once.
Getting ready
Pre & post treatment
Almost all of this is about giving your lymphatic system an easy job. It is unglamorous and it is the difference between a course that works and one that disappoints.
On the day
- Drink properly beforehand, starting the day before rather than in the waiting room. Well-hydrated tissue transmits the ultrasound better and clears the result faster.
- Eat light. A heavy meal immediately before the appointment is not forbidden, it is just unhelpful.
- Come with a clean neck — no heavy creams, oils or makeup on the area, because the gel needs contact with skin.
- Tell us about any pacemaker or implanted device, thyroid conditions, liver or kidney problems, pregnancy or nursing, and any metal in the area. Some of those rule this out entirely.
The days after
- Keep drinking for two or three days. This is the single most repeated instruction we give and the most often ignored.
- Move. A walk, the stairs, anything that keeps lymph circulating. It does not need to be a workout.
- Go easy on alcohol and heavy fat for a day or two, since the liver is already dealing with what we released.
- Expect nothing for the first fortnight. Mild tenderness or a faint pink mark is all there is to see. The change shows up weeks later, gradually, which is why people close to you rarely notice a date.
Results
Double chin removal before and after
A You Glow Aesthetics client after a course of non-surgical treatment under the chin. The thing to look at is the line running from chin to neck, not the face.

Results vary with how much fat is there to begin with, how elastic the skin is, how many sessions are completed and how steady your weight stays afterwards. This is a contouring treatment for a specific pad, not a weight loss treatment, and we will say so at the consultation if what we are looking at is beyond what a course can do.
