About the treatment
Exfoliation somebody is steering
Every exfoliating treatment removes the same thing — the layer of dead cells sitting on top of your skin. What separates them is how much control there is over how much comes off.
A scrub is whatever you did with your hands that morning. A chemical peel is a reaction you start and then wait out; once the acid is on the skin, the depth is set by its strength and by how your skin happens to respond that day. Microdermabrasion is the one where a person is making that decision continuously.
The tool is a wand tipped with industrial diamond grit, with suction drawn through the same head. The grit abrades; the suction lifts the loosened material away and pulls the skin very slightly up into the tip as it passes. Your therapist changes the outcome three ways while it is happening: which grade of tip, how strong the suction, and how many times the same patch is crossed. Thin skin over the cheekbone gets one light pass. An oily, congested nose gets several firmer ones. In the same appointment, on the same face.
That is why this is the treatment we reach for when someone arrives unsure how their skin will behave, or has had a bad experience with acids. It can be dialled down to almost nothing and then built up at the next visit, and nothing continues working after you leave the chair.
The local problem
Why northwest Calgary skin is so often both flaky and congested
It sounds like a contradiction and it is the most common presentation we see up here. Dry, tight and peeling across the cheeks, and blocked and bumpy through the centre of the face.
Calgary sits over a kilometre above sea level in a climate that is dry to begin with, and the chinooks take the humidity through the floor several times a winter. Skin loses water to the air faster than it can replace it, the surface layer dries out and stops shedding cleanly, and you get flaking.
Then the skin does the sensible thing and makes more oil to compensate. That oil now has to escape through a surface layer that is thicker and stickier than it should be, so it does not escape. It backs up in the pore instead, mixing with the dead cells it cannot push past, and turns into the blackheads and small bumps across the nose and chin.
Both halves have the same root cause, which is why one treatment answers both. Take the stuck layer off mechanically and the flaking stops because the loose material is gone, and the congestion starts clearing because the oil has somewhere to go again.
If your skin is dry and congested at once, it is not two problems.
Why here
What this city does to the surface, and how it fits a working week
Four things about doing this in Ranchlands rather than anywhere else.
Altitude thins the filter
There is measurably less atmosphere between Calgary and the sun than there is over most Canadian cities, and the ultraviolet reading reflects it. That accelerates the thickening and roughening of the outer layer that this treatment removes — and it is why we are strict about sunscreen afterwards rather than polite about it.
Chinooks make acids a gamble
A barrier that has just been through a thirty-degree swing in two days is not in a state to take a strong chemical peel comfortably. A mechanical treatment can be dialled down to suit whatever the weather has left you with, on the day, which is a real advantage in this city.
We are open weekdays only, so downtime matters
Our Ranchlands Boulevard clinic runs Monday to Friday and is closed at weekends, which means anything with visible recovery has to be planned carefully. This has none. You are a little pink, it settles within the afternoon, and there is no weekend to hide in.
The mountains are an hour away, and they count
Weekends in Kananaskis, Canmore or Banff put you higher again, often on snow, often for whole days. It is the exposure northwest Calgary underestimates most, and it is the reason a resurfaced face needs protecting properly on Saturday as well as Monday.
No recovery to plan around, which is the point.
Indications
What is it good for?
Everything that lives on the outside of the skin. If a fingertip can find it, it is in scope.
Sagging and loss of firmness sit far below this and belong with face and neck tightening. Dehydration on its own responds better to a hydro facial. The full northwest menu is on the Calgary NW clinic page.
Bring us the complaint and we will tell you which treatment owns it.
Choosing between them
Grit or acid
Mechanical and chemical exfoliation reach the same layer by completely different means. Which suits you depends less on your goal than on how your skin behaves when it is provoked.
Microdermabrasion
- Physical removal, adjusted pass by pass as it happens
- Stops the moment the wand lifts off
- Suction also clears the pore opening
- No stinging, no peeling, nothing to wait out
- Comfortable on skin that reacts to almost everything
AFA chemical peel
- Chemical loosening, with the depth set by the formulation
- Keeps working on the skin after the appointment ends
- Reaches unevenness in tone that grit does not touch
- Warmth or tingling during, then a few days of light flaking
- Better where pigment and dullness are the main complaint
Rough, congested and unpredictable points to the wand. Uneven in colour and reliably well behaved points to the peel. They are not rivals — plenty of people here alternate them through the year and simply avoid running both in the same fortnight.
Let us see how your skin actually behaves before choosing.
Getting ready
Pre & post treatment
Short on both sides. The one instruction that genuinely matters is not to exfoliate twice in the same week by two different methods.
Coming in
- Retinol off for five days. It thins the surface, and a thinned surface abrades unevenly.
- Acids, scrubs and cleansing brushes off for three days. Nothing waxed on the face in that window either.
- A fortnight clear of any other resurfacing — a peel, a laser, needling — in either direction.
- Flag anything relevant at booking: cold sores, active eczema or rosacea in the area, medication that thins the skin, or a windburn from the weekend.
Going out
- For the first hours: pink and slightly tight, like a brisk walk in cold wind. It fades without anything being done to it.
- Skin absorbs unusually well now, so use the simplest moisturiser you own — and specifically not the strongest serum you own.
- Skip heat that evening: hot tub, sauna, and a very hot shower all extend the flush for no benefit.
- Sunscreen from the next morning without exception. At this altitude, with newly exposed skin, that is the whole aftercare in one line.
