About the treatment
Why the fat under your chin ignores everything
Submental fat — the pad that sits under the jaw — has very little to do with what you weigh. Plenty of lean people have it and plenty of heavier people do not, because where your body chooses to store fat is largely inherited and not something training redistributes.
This is why chin and neck exercises are a waste of time. You cannot direct fat loss to one region by working the muscle beneath it; the muscle gets stronger and the pad stays exactly where it was. It is also why this particular area drives people to look for a treatment when nothing else about their body does.
Laser lipo technology takes a different route. Low-level laser energy applied over the area makes the membranes of the fat cells beneath permeable, and they release what they were storing. Nothing is cut, injected or frozen, there is no anaesthetic, and at our Pembina Highway clinic a session runs comfortably inside an hour.
The first question
Is it fat, or is it loose skin?
This decides whether the treatment will work for you, and it is the first thing we check. The two look similar in a photograph and behave completely differently.
Fat feels like a pad
Soft, thick, and it sits as a distinct volume below the jawline. Pinch it and there is substance between your fingers. This is what laser lipo reduces, and where you can expect a real change in profile.
Laxity feels like fabric
Thin, draping, and it moves independently of anything beneath it. Pinch and you get skin and very little else. Reducing fat under loose skin can make the looseness read more clearly, not less — the opposite of what you wanted.
Most people have some of each
Which is why the plan is usually not one treatment. Reducing the pad and separately working on the firmness of the skin over it — with microneedling or red light — gives a better outcome than either alone.
We will tell you if it is mostly skin
If laxity dominates, laser lipo is the wrong purchase and we will say so at the consultation rather than sell you a course that cannot deliver. That conversation costs nothing and takes ten minutes.
Not sure which of the two you are looking at in the mirror?
How it works
Where the fat actually goes
Three stages, and only the first one happens while you are in the room.
The cells release
Laser energy passes into the fat layer and makes the cell membranes permeable, so the stored triglycerides move out into the surrounding fluid. What you feel is warmth and light pressure. Nothing else.
Your lymphatic system clears it
The released contents enter the lymphatic system and are processed the way your body handles fat from any other source. This takes weeks, and it is the reason drinking properly afterwards is a real instruction rather than spa filler.
The jawline separates
As volume under the chin reduces, the line between jaw and neck becomes distinct again. It is a contour change and you see it first in profile — which is, not coincidentally, the angle most people avoid in photographs.

Indications
What is it good for?
One area, one problem — a persistent fat pad that has not moved with anything else.
Stubborn fat elsewhere is laser lipo cavitation. Everything else is on our Winnipeg clinic page.

Being straight with you
Three things worth knowing before you book
Your scale will not notice
One pad, one region. Nothing about your overall weight changes and nothing else you are doing gets replaced — but the deposit under your jaw is one that dieting and training famously refuse to touch.
Nothing happens in the first fortnight
If a clinic shows you a same-afternoon difference, what you are looking at is swelling. Real change starts appearing somewhere around week three or four and carries on developing for a couple of months after that.
It lasts as long as your weight does
Emptied cells are cleared away permanently. The remaining ones retain the ability to fill, so putting on significant weight will bring the pad back. Better said before you book than discovered later.
Getting ready
Pre & post treatment
Hydration is the one that genuinely changes your result. The rest is straightforward.
Coming in
- Start drinking a day or two early. Your lymphatic system is what removes the fat, and it works better hydrated.
- Face, jaw and neck clean — no make-up, no moisturiser, nothing on the skin.
- Nothing that thins the blood for a day or two: alcohol, aspirin, ibuprofen. It keeps bruising down.
- A close shave under the chin and along the neck, if that applies to you.
Going home
- A little puffiness or tenderness under the jaw is ordinary and clears in a few days.
- Hands off. Do not rub, press or massage the area, however tempting.
- Carry on drinking water. This is not filler advice — it is the mechanism by which the result appears.
- Skip anything that heats you up for a day or two: saunas, long hot showers, hard exercise.
- Look again in a month, not on Friday.
Results
Double chin removal before and after
A client at You Glow Aesthetics, photographed in profile — the angle where submental fat shows and where the change is visible.

Individual results vary with the amount of fat present, skin elasticity, how many sessions are completed and whether weight stays stable.
