About the treatment
Hair restoration that starts with the scalp, not the hair
Hair restoration in Vancouver at You Glow Aesthetics is built around the scalp. We use NOUVADerm, a fractional 1927 nm thulium laser, to renew the scalp environment, and we combine it with DRIVE Exosomes, microneedling and PRP or PRF depending on what your assessment shows. It is non-surgical and it is not a transplant.
Most hair products work on the hair shaft, which is the part that is already dead. The living part is underneath: the follicle and the scalp tissue around it. If that environment is tight, inflamed, poorly conditioned or badly supplied, nothing applied to the shaft changes the outcome.
Fractional laser energy creates microscopic treatment zones across selected areas of the scalp. The controlled renewal response that follows improves the condition and appearance of the scalp, and leaves a prepared surface for the topical scalp products that go on immediately afterwards — which is the part a serum applied at home cannot replicate.
The NOUVADerm device is licensed by Health Canada. Thinning has many causes — genetics, hormones, nutrition, stress, medication and medical conditions among them — and the consultation exists to work out whether this belongs in your plan at all.

Not sure whether your thinning is treatable?
Candidacy
Who this is for, and who it is not for
This matters more than the number of sessions, so it is worth being precise before you book anything.
Thinning with follicles still present: yes
Reduced density, early thinning, hair that looks weak or fragile, and areas that simply appear less full. Where the follicle is still there, there is something to support.
Areas where hair is completely gone: no
Longstanding, complete loss needs medical assessment or a surgical option. A scalp treatment cannot create a follicle that is no longer there, and we will tell you that at the consultation rather than after five appointments.
Scalp condition and scalp health: yes
Dryness, poor condition and a scalp that has never been treated as skin all respond. For many clients this is the change they notice first, before any change in density.
A receding hairline: sometimes
The frontal scalp can be included where follicles remain and the underlying cause is appropriate. Whether it is worth treating is a judgement made on your scalp, not on a diagram.
Men and women both. Scalp protocols are selected per client after consultation, not by pattern type alone. Related reading on our scalp health and dry scalp pages.
The technology
Why a 1927 nm wavelength is used on skin that grows hair
The scalp is skin. Treating it as skin is the entire idea.
1927 nm thulium is absorbed by water in tissue rather than by pigment, which is what makes it usable across hair colours and skin tones with appropriate settings. It is the same wavelength class as the systems you may have read about under the Fraxel and Sciton Moxi names; NOUVADerm is the system we use to deliver it at our West Broadway clinic.
Renew the environment
Controlled fractional zones prompt a renewal response in the scalp tissue, improving its condition, texture and appearance.
Open a route for topicals
A freshly treated scalp is a structured platform for the scalp products applied straight after, which is where DRIVE Exosomes go.
Stack where it helps
Microneedling, PRP and PRF are integrated into the same protocol when the assessment supports it, sequenced rather than piled on.
Going further
DRIVE Exosomes and what else goes in the plan
The laser is one component. On its own it is a scalp treatment; inside a protocol it is a hair-restoration plan.
DRIVE Exosomes
An optional premium add-on applied after selected scalp treatments. A plant-based biotherapy using plant-derived secretory factors rather than human or animal material, delivering exosome-like particles, growth factors and peptides to support scalp hydration, conditioning, recovery and overall scalp rejuvenation. Optional, never required.
PRP and PRF
Platelet-rich plasma or fibrin drawn from your own blood, used for regenerative support within the same protocol. Available at our Vancouver clinic alongside the rest of our naturopathic and injectable services.
Microneedling
A second, mechanical route to the same renewal response, sequenced with the laser rather than performed on the same day as a matter of course.
Home care and maintenance
Scalp serums between appointments and maintenance treatments afterwards. Hair growth runs on its own cycle and nothing in the clinic substitutes for consistency at home.
If you use minoxidil or Rogaine, in most cases it stays in the plan. Some formulations need pausing around a treatment depending on scalp condition and intensity, and you will be given individual instructions.
Being straight with you
Three things we will not pretend about hair
Hair restoration is the area of aesthetics with the loudest promises and the longest timelines. Both of those are worth naming.
No treatment guarantees regrowth
Thinning has many causes and no single treatment overrides all of them. This is designed to support the scalp and the appearance of thinning hair, and that is the claim we will make.
You will notice the scalp first
Scalp condition changes well before density does. Clients who expect density in month one conclude it failed in month two, which is a timing problem rather than a treatment problem.
Photographs are not optional
Hair change is invisible day to day and obvious across months. Same part line, same angle, same lighting, same dry hair. Without them nobody can honestly assess the result, including us.
Getting ready
Pre & post treatment
Recovery on the scalp is manageable, usually about one to three days depending on the protocol.
Before your appointment
- Arrive with clean, dry, product-free hair and no styling product on the scalp.
- Bring your current scalp and hair products, or photographs of the labels.
- Tell us about medication, any blood thinners, and any recent scalp treatment.
- Pause minoxidil if instructed — this depends on the formulation and is decided for you, not as a blanket rule.
- Take your baseline photographs before the first session.
The days after
- Redness, warmth, tenderness, dryness or mild flaking for roughly one to three days.
- Leave the scalp alone. No scratching, no picking at flaking, and no vigorous brushing over treated areas.
- Gentle washing only once you are told the scalp is ready, with nothing medicated unless we say so.
- No sauna, steam or swimming while the scalp is recovering.
- Sun protection on exposed scalp — a hat is the easy answer.
Results
How many treatments, and when you will see it
Hair restoration is a process measured in months, and the schedule reflects the hair cycle rather than the clinic diary.
An initial series
For most clients, roughly three to five NOUVADerm scalp treatments to begin with. The exact number depends on the degree of thinning, scalp condition and how you respond.
Scalp first, then hair
Condition and comfort change early. Visible change in density, fullness and hair quality develops gradually over several months.
Then maintenance
Recommended on the basis of your goals and how the scalp and hair behave over time, not on a fixed schedule sold in advance.
Outcomes vary with the cause of thinning, age, genetics, hormonal factors, general health, treatment consistency, home care and whatever else is included in the plan. Treatment itself takes roughly 15 to 30 minutes depending on the area and the protocol.

Questions
Hair restoration in Vancouver — your questions
The seven we are asked most often, answered without the usual hedging.
Is it suitable for men and women?
Both. Scalp protocols are selected per client after an assessment of the thinning pattern, density and scalp condition, rather than from a diagram of male or female pattern loss.
Can it treat a receding hairline?
Sometimes. The frontal scalp can be included where follicles are still present and the underlying cause is appropriate. Whether it is worth treating is a judgement made on your scalp at the consultation, and the answer is occasionally no.
Can I treat an area where hair is completely gone?
Generally not. This is for areas where follicles are still present and the goal is to support thinning or reduced density. Longstanding complete loss needs a medical assessment or a surgical option, and we would rather tell you that now than take you through a course that cannot work.
Can it be combined with PRP, PRF or microneedling?
Yes, and for many clients that is the plan rather than the laser alone. Your provider sequences them according to the scalp, the treatment intensity and the overall goal — sequenced, not stacked into one appointment for the sake of it.
Can I keep using minoxidil or Rogaine?
In most cases yes, and it usually stays part of the overall plan. Some formulations need pausing around a treatment depending on the product, the scalp condition and the intensity used. You will be given individual pre- and post-treatment instructions rather than a blanket rule.
Are DRIVE Exosomes required?
No. They are an optional premium add-on used to complement selected scalp treatments. The protocol works without them and nobody will be pushed into adding them.
How long is the recovery?
Usually about one to three days depending on the protocol and how you respond. Expect some redness, warmth, tenderness, dryness, mild flaking or general scalp sensitivity, and leave it alone while it settles.
